Gertrud
Katharina von Bülow
Mezzo-Soprano
After studying with Judith Beckmann, Sena Jurinac and Brigitte Fassbaender, the German mezzo-soprano Katharina von Bülow was immediately engaged on a permanent basis and initially sang numerous roles in the lyric repertoire, including her celebrated Octavian.
More recently, roles such as Gertrud, Kundry and Fricka have been added.
After the premiere of “Walküre” at the Nationaltheater Mannheim under Alex Soddy in July 2022, the artist will now take part in the Ring at the Dresden Semperoper under Christian Thielemann as Walküre.
In recent seasons, Katharina von Bülow sang in the new production of the Ring in Düsseldorf under Axel Kober, made her debut in Würzburg as Erste Norn and Fricka, gave her house debut in Magdeburg, was in Mannheim and Bonn for Hansel and Gretel and also in Bonn for a new production. In May/June 2021, she returned to the Komische Oper Berlin as a guest in Zigeunerbaron.
Katharina von Bülow has sung at the opera houses in Lyon, Lisbon, the Komische Oper Berlin, the Deutsche Oper am Rhein Düsseldorf, the Hamburg State Opera, the Nationaltheater Mannheim, at the Bregenz Festival, to name but a few.
She has inspired conductors such as Kazushi Ono, Axel Kober, Simone Young, Will Humburg, Lothar Koenigs and Frank Beermann and has worked with such renowned directors as Barrie Kosky, Christoph Loy, Dietrich Hilsdorf, Achim Freyer and David Mouchtar-Samorai.
The artist is also at home in modern music, where the enormous versatility of her voice, her intense stage presence and musicality come into their own, for example as Countess v.Kirchstetten in Henze's “Elegy for Young Lovers”, in “Das Gehege” by Wolfgang Rihm and in “Jacobs room” by Morton Subotnick, with which she thrilled audiences at the Bregenz Festival.
She has taken part in numerous premieres and first performances such as Detlev Glanert's “Joseph Süss”, Eötvös' “Lilith”, Blitzstein's “Triple sec”, Heucke's “Frauenorchester in Auschwitz” and Sidney Corbett's “Noach”.
